Everyone has a unique set of values they choose to live by. For some, their beliefs and philosophies come from religion, while for others it may be guided by societal norms or individual morality. No matter the source of these values, each person’s life is shaped by the decisions they make when confronted with situations that challenge their core values.
It is up to each person to determine what matters most in life and how those values will be put into action. In this article, we’ll explore the values people can use to guide their actions and direct where they want their life to go.
Shaping Your Life’s Direction
Every day presents us with decisions that challenge our perseverance, virtue, character and overall wellbeing. Roy Disney astutely stated “It’s not hard to make decisions when you know what your core values are.” Such words of wisdom are both accurate and powerful.
My values are my guides; they not only provide me with a clear direction, but also determine how I make decisions in any situation. They help keep me accountable and alert me if ever I diverge from the path I have chosen for myself. When our choices (and words) align with our beliefs, life is usually harmonious. However when we act contrary to what’s meaningful to us deep inside, an unease starts stirring within that can disrupt our minds and emotions alike.
Achieving mental and emotional equilibrium is critical for all of us, making it essential to identify our most substantial values. Doing so will assist in reducing stress levels while understanding ourselves better. When we make decisions based on these core values each day, internal harmony can be achieved. Therefore, set aside some time to contemplate your true principles and let those become the driving force behind the choices you make in life; when you know what truly matters to you, decision-making becomes effortless.
Although we may not acknowledge it, our values are present and guide every choice and action we make in life. When we recognize the essence of what matters most to us, living by these values becomes far simpler and less stressful no matter the situation or challenge that arises. By aligning with our values, our productivity and personal efficiency gets naturally enhanced.
Values are at the core of a person’s identity, and they serve as a foundation for their decisions and actions. What matters to an individual determines how they will act in different situations, impacting short-term choices as well as long-term outcomes. For instance, someone who values fairness might decide to stand up for a friend in an argument, while someone focused on success might spend extra hours studying for an exam. People can also be guided by more abstract values such as compassion or justice, and this can inform how they treat others and interact with the world. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to determine what matters most to them and use that value system to direct their life.
Choosing A New Set of Rules to Live By
Every individual’s values are unique and vary. Many people contend that, in some form or another, all people have similar values; yet others believe it is how we prioritize pursuing them that makes us distinct from one another. From personal integrity to courage to respectfulness – there is an infinite assortment of values you can choose to live by. Here are a few examples of values (and values statements) that you can choose to accept as your own:
➤ Authenticity: I shall always remain true to myself, no matter the setting. This offers others around me an opportunity to get acquainted with my genuine self and allows for a strong foundation of confidence and self-worth that can never be taken away from me. Genuineness is essential in creating trustworthiness within oneself.
➤ Belief in Others: Many people suffer from a lack of self-confidence, hindering their lives in detrimental ways. I make it my mission to trust those around me despite their own doubts, since there was once someone who believed in me when I had lost faith myself. This is an absolute necessity for me because of that life-changing experience.
➤ Caring: Everyone’s capable of offering care and empathy, yet many people lack a fundamental understanding until they have experienced it themselves. The Golden Rule serves as an important reminder to think before we act: “Treat others in the way that you would want to be treated.” It is by embodying this concept that meaningful relationships can begin to form.
➤ Commitment: Demonstrating commitment reflects loyalty, bravery and resilience. A pledge made is a guarantee we have given to ourselves and others. Respecting our promises can be the distinction between someone trusting us or perceiving us as unreliable and cowardly.
➤ Consistency: I am aware that the world is constantly changing, but I strive to stay grounded in my values and remain consistent in my day-to-day life. This offers me comfort when faced with an uncertain future, as it is a reminder of what truly matters and how I want to live my life.
➤ Cooperation: Collaborating with others is an essential skill for anyone, as it reveals our ability to be empathetic and resilient in any situation. By listening carefully and actively participating in conversations, we can help each other reach a common goal.
➤ Connection: Interactions are all about choices: we can choose to connect or disconnect. Though the majority of us prefer bonding, life’s experiences often lead us in the other direction. Connecting profoundly means being honest and authentic with ourselves and forging a strong moral character that won’t waver – these values are closely intertwined.
➤ Compassion: Compassion is a powerful tool that helps us to think beyond ourselves and develop empathy for those around us. It can lead to meaningful connections with others, but more importantly it can remind us of our own humanity and humble us.
➤ Dedication: Keep going and never give in no matter what the situation may be. It’s better to be labeled a failure than to quit, as it takes courage to tackle complex problems – something that deserves respect. Cowards opt out when things get difficult, so never allow yourself to quit.
➤ Devotion: Some days are always naturally better than others in regards to our interpersonal relationships and our faith. Things can get unstable at times, but staying devoted to a cause or a person through the uncertain times is our rock to grasp when our faith and our foundation is shaky. Remember, the opposite of faith is fear – and fear is utterly meaningless!
➤ Effort: We are uniquely capable of putting forth effort, making the most of our time, and changing challenges into opportunities. The effort we put in is a representation of our determination to do better and constantly improve ourselves.
➤ Flexibility: The ability to adjust plans quickly without reducing quality can be extremely beneficial when life throws unexpected curve-balls. Adopting a flexible attitude makes it easier to tackle problems and think outside the box.
➤ Freedom: We have each been given a number of days that we were not in control of receiving. However, the free-will that we’ve also been given allows us to determine how it is that we waist or invest this time. Where most men and women spend anything up to a lifetime working for money, wise people spend their assets in pursuit of more time.
➤ Forgiveness: To be clear, the purpose of forgiveness is not to forget an offence that’s been made towards you; but rather, to free yourself from the anger or hurt that keeps people back from moving forward into their future for anything up to a lifetime.
➤ Friendship: Nothing can compare to having strong, loyal and supportive friends who fully understand you. True friendship is about being able to trust one another, tell each other anything that’s on your mind, or rely on them for a shoulder to cry on when times are tough.
➤ Gratitude: An proverb once stated; “He who has will forever be in abundance, and he who has not will live his life in lack.” It’s easy to focus on what we don’t have in life rather on what we do. Gratitude is amongst the most attractive characteristics that a person can possess in life.
➤ Humility: Remaining humble in times of success or failure allows us to keep our feet on the ground, and to remain grounded in our values. It also provides us with perspective on where we are in life and allows us to take a step back when necessary, so we can make wise decisions.
➤ Honesty: To live authentically; to live honestly, keeps our heart and our minds free from doubt, fear and uncertainty. When we are fully committed to a life of honesty, the judgements and assumptions that other people make of us will forever be irrelevant to our emotional wellbeing.
➤ Hope: Hope is the fuel that keeps us moving forward when we are beyond exhausted. Hope reassures us that sometimes, ascertaining our goals is not a matter of ‘if’, but only when.
➤ Integrity: Nothing is more important than integrity – it’s what makes us stand out from others. It’s our ability to remain true to ourselves and honouring our commitments, regardless of the consequences. It could be said that integrity is the foundation of any successful life.
➤ Joy: Finding joy in each day gives us a sense of purpose in life and keeps us focused on what matters. Celebrate your successes, no matter how small they may be, and always remember that it’s those small successes that will ultimately bring you the greatest joy in life.
➤ Kinship: The most important relationship we can have is with ourselves – only then can we truly understand who we are and our potential. Appreciating the value of human connections, understanding other perspectives, and having meaningful conversations with strangers and friends alike will help us to create a sense of kinship with the world around us.
➤ Love: The most powerful force that can be shared in this world is love. Whether it’s family, friends or our partner, always strive to show those closest to us the love and appreciation that they deserve. Love is a powerful source of strength and will help us through tough times.
➤ Mentorship: Having someone that we can look up to, learn from, and rely on for guidance or advice is invaluable. Mentors provide insight that we may not otherwise be aware of, and their presence can give us a sense of confidence and strength. This mentor can also be you!
➤ Patience: Having the ability to persevere and ride out the tough times with grace is a quality that will serve us well in life. Patience is not about waiting for something, it’s about understanding, accepting and trusting that everything happens in its own time.
➤ Respect: When we treat people with the same respect we would like to be dealt with; we validate the other person’s dignity alongside enhancing our own. Treating others with respect is of the utmost importance, regardless of the situation or the individual’s background.
➤ Sacrifice: We all have to make sacrifices in life to ultimately strive for success, whether it’s sacrificing time or energy. However, these sacrifices are worthwhile when we keep our end goal in sight and realize that the hardships of today will be worth the rewards of tomorrow.
➤ Trust: The building blocks of any meaningful relationship is trust. Knowing that we can rely on another person, or ourselves is a powerful source of emotional strength. We must always strive to extend trust in those closest to us and always be sure to keep our promises.
➤ Tolerance: Tolerance is the ability to accept and understand that there are many approaches that can be taken towards living life. We must always strive to have an open mind, be respectful of different perspectives and never forget that each person’s story is unique.
➤ Unity: The most meaningful relationships we can develop in life are those which are rooted in unity. Unity promotes understanding, cooperation and collaboration, which helps bring people together from all walks of life. Unity is the foundation for a strong and resilient future.
➤ Virtue: Having virtue is a sign of strength and courage, it’s the ability to act out of love and understanding regardless of what the outcome may be. When we stay true to our values, no matter how difficult life gets; this is when we truly know that nothing can stand in our way.
➤ Vision: Our vision for life should be clear, concise and compelling. Set your goals high, have the courage to take risks, and make sure that you’re always striving towards something greater. Our visions will inspire us and provide the guidance needed to achieve our fullest potential.
➤ Wisdom: Seeking self-knowledge, social awareness and gaining insight into the world around us is one of life’s greatest gifts. Wisdom helps us to make sound decisions, think critically and understand both our own potential as well as that of others.
➤ Zeal: The determination to make something meaningful out of life is what sets apart those who can achieve from those who think they cannot. Having zeal can motivate us when we feel discouraged and encourages us to take the necessary steps towards turning goals into reality.
By taking the time to determine what matters most to you and adhering to that value system, your life can become more meaningful and fulfilling. Your values should be used as a guide for all of your decisions, big or small. Remember that it is not only acceptable but encouraged to change your values over time – after all, our lives are ever-evolving. So, choose your values wisely and live by them faithfully – it can help you get to where you want to be!
