The “ABC” of CBT

During this triad, we explore the basic ABC model of CBT with DEF i.e. disputing the irrational belief using Socratic questioning methods and forming new empowering beliefs.

Albert Ellis, Ph.D., the American psychologist who in 1955 developed REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy) created the ABC model in his attempt to help people understand the meaning of our reactions to adversity. This ABC Framework follows the teachings of Dr. Ellis and helps individuals to begin identifying their limiting beliefs and build awareness of ‘how’ they think. By identifying thoughts that are often irrational, illogical and unhelpful, they can start to dispute them and begin to practise replacing them with healthier alternatives.

Exploring the “DEF” after “ABC”

During the second Triad in this series, we will continue deeper with the ABC model of CBT with more emphasis on DEF i.e. Disputing the irrational belief using Socratic questioning methods.

This ABC -DEF Framework helps individuals to begin identifying their limiting beliefs and build awareness of ‘how’ they think. By identifying thoughts that are often irrational, illogical and unhelpful, they can start to dispute them and begin to practise replacing them with healthier alternatives, ultimately leading to more functional behaviors.

The AWARE method to address anxiety

CBT is said to be most effective against dealing with anxiety. In this Triad we will explore how one of the most popular methods “AWARE” is used to deal with acute anxiety. This builds up on the ABC model that we have practiced in the previous two triads.

Cognitive Distortions

In the fourth Triad of this series, we will explore some Cognitive Distortions and how to dispute them using the ABC-DEF method that we have learned in the past.

Problem-solving in CBT

In this triad we will explore one of the most versatile skills used in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: problem solving. The process of problem solving consists of applying seven sequential steps

Putting it all together

In the last Triad of this series we will focus on putting the elements of the CBT framework – the change-focused techniques, communication skills and language patterns – learned over the past 5 practice Triads, together into an actual CBT session.
