Estimated reading time: 4 minutes
Click your profile picture in the Achology community on Circle, select “Notifications,” and customise exactly what triggers alerts and how you receive them. You can adjust settings per space — so you hear about what matters and filter out what doesn’t.
The short answer
- Click your profile picture (top right), then select “Notifications”
- Choose which activity types trigger alerts: comments on your posts, mentions, likes, new posts in specific spaces
- Adjust notification preferences per space — opt into the ones you care about, mute the rest
- Control delivery method: in-app notifications, email digests, or push notifications on mobile
- Revisit these settings any time your engagement patterns change
The full answer
Getting notifications right matters more than most people realise. Too many alerts and you’ll start ignoring everything — including event reminders that directly affect your CPD journey. Too few and you’ll drift away from conversations and miss opportunities to connect. The goal is a setup that keeps you informed without overwhelming you.
How to access your settings
Open the Achology community on Circle — desktop or the mobile app. Click or tap your profile picture in the upper right corner. Select “Notifications” from the dropdown menu. This opens your full notification control panel.
The entire process takes under two minutes. It’s worth doing properly during your first week.
Activity notifications
The first section controls alerts for community activity directed at you personally. You can toggle notifications for comments on your posts, replies to your comments, mentions (when someone tags you using @), likes on your posts, and direct messages from other members.
Recommended starting point: keep comments, mentions, and direct messages turned on. These represent people actively engaging with you or trying to reach you. Likes are lower priority — turn them on if you enjoy the feedback, turn them off if the volume distracts you.
Space-level notifications
This is where the real customisation happens. Circle lets you set notification preferences for each individual space in the community. You can choose to receive alerts for every new post in a space, only for posts where someone mentions you, or not at all.
High-priority spaces to turn on: the academy calendar or events space (so you never miss VALTS and PALS sessions), any announcement or news space, and course-specific spaces relevant to what you’re currently studying.
Spaces to consider muting: general chat or social spaces if you prefer to browse them on your own schedule rather than reacting to every new post. Resource or read-only spaces that update infrequently and don’t require immediate attention.
You can revisit these settings any time. As you progress through your courses and shift focus to different areas of study, adjust your space notifications to match your current priorities.
Email vs push vs in-app
Circle offers three notification channels, and each serves a different purpose:
In-app notifications appear as a badge or alert inside the Circle platform when you’re actively using it. These are unobtrusive and useful for staying current during active browsing sessions.
Email notifications arrive in your inbox. Circle can send individual emails per event or batch them into a digest. If you find individual emails too frequent, switch to the digest format — it consolidates activity into a single summary without burying your inbox.
Push notifications come through the Circle mobile app directly to your phone. These are especially valuable for event reminders. When a session you’ve RSVPed to goes live, a push notification gets your attention immediately — even if you’re not actively browsing the community.
For the best experience, keep push notifications enabled for events and direct messages, use email digests for general community activity, and let in-app notifications handle the rest while you’re browsing.
Troubleshooting notification issues
“I’m not receiving any notifications.” Check two places. First, your Circle notification settings (profile picture → Notifications). Second, your phone’s system settings for the Circle app — your device may have blocked push notifications at the operating system level. Both need to allow alerts.
“I’m getting too many emails.” Switch individual email notifications to digest mode, or turn off email alerts entirely for low-priority spaces. You can always catch up through in-app notifications instead.
“I missed an event I RSVPed to.” Make sure event notifications and push notifications are both enabled. Then add future events to your personal calendar as a backup — the calendar invite includes the join link and triggers your phone’s own reminder system independently of Circle.
Adjust as you go
Your ideal notification setup will change over time. During your first month, you might want more notifications while you’re learning the community culture and finding your rhythm. Six months in, you’ll know exactly which spaces deserve your attention and which ones you’d rather browse at your own pace. Treat notification settings as a living configuration, not a one-time decision.
Next step
Open the Achology community, click your profile picture, and spend two minutes configuring your notifications right now. Prioritise event reminders and direct messages — everything else can wait until you know your preferences better.
