What happens to my CPD credits if I leave Achology?

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Your CPD progress is preserved. If you cancel membership and rejoin later, your completed VALTS, PALS, CIPS, course completions, and member journey level remain intact. You pick up where you left off — nothing resets.

The short answer

  • Completed CPD activities (VALTS attended, PALS delivered, CIPS conducted) remain on your record
  • Your member journey level doesn’t reset — if you reached Achologist Adept, you return as Achologist Adept
  • Course completions and certificates are unaffected (lifetime access)
  • What pauses is your ability to accumulate new CPD credits, since that requires active membership
  • Master Achologist status has annual maintenance requirements, so extended gaps affect that level specifically

The full answer

Life happens. People take breaks for all sorts of legitimate reasons — financial constraints, family commitments, career transitions, or simply needing time to integrate what they’ve already learned. The question isn’t whether you should take a break if you need one. It’s what happens to the progress you’ve built.

What’s preserved during a membership gap

Every CPD activity you’ve completed remains on your record. The VALTS you participated in, the PALS you hosted and received, the CIPS you delivered, and the Code of Ethics training you completed — all of it stays documented. Your member journey level is tied to cumulative achievement, not continuous membership. If you earned Certified Achologist or Achologist Adept status before leaving, that progress doesn’t vanish because your subscription lapsed.

Your course completions and certificates are entirely separate from membership. Those are permanently yours regardless of membership status.

What stops during a gap

What you lose is access to the infrastructure that generates new CPD credits. Without active membership, you can’t attend VALTS, participate in PALS sessions, deliver CIPS, or engage with the community learning environment. Your CPD journey effectively pauses — it doesn’t reverse, but it doesn’t advance either.

This means returning members aren’t starting over. They’re resuming from wherever they left off, with full access to continue building on their existing foundation.

The Master Achologist exception

Master Achologist is the one level with ongoing maintenance requirements — annual VALTS, PALS, CIPS, and Code of Ethics completion. An extended membership gap would naturally interrupt those annual obligations. If you’ve reached Master Achologist and take a break, you’d need to discuss your specific situation with the Achology team when returning to clarify how maintenance requirements apply.

For all other levels, there’s no maintenance requirement — once achieved, the level stands.

The practical reality

Some members cancel for three months and return refreshed. Others take a year out and come back with renewed clarity about what they want from their development. Neither approach is penalised. Standard pricing applies when you return, your account history is intact, and you re-enter the community at your established level.

The CPD journey is designed for real life, not idealised linear progression. Breaks don’t break it.

Next step

If you’re considering a break, cancel your membership without guilt — your progress will be waiting when you’re ready to return. If you’re returning after a gap, reactivate your membership and check your CPD record to see exactly where you left off.
