Do I need to complete courses in a specific order?

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

Most Achology courses have no mandatory sequence—you can learn in whatever order matches your needs and interests. Only advanced practitioner courses (NLP Master Practitioner, Skilled Helper Practitioner) require completing their foundation levels first. Beyond those exceptions, course order is flexible and self-directed.

The short answer

  • No mandatory sequence for most courses — learn in whatever order suits you
  • Exceptions: Advanced practitioner courses require foundation levels first
  • Recommended progression exists but isn’t enforced—some courses build naturally on others
  • Self-directed learning means you decide the path based on your needs
  • Start anywhere that addresses your current interests or challenges
  • DiMAP provides broad foundation if you prefer structured beginning, but it’s optional

The full answer

Achology’s curriculum is designed for flexible, self-directed learning. You’re not locked into rigid sequences or forced progressions. However, some courses naturally build on others, and a few have explicit prerequisites.

Courses with mandatory prerequisites. Only advanced practitioner courses require prior completion:

NLP Master Practitioner Course requires completing the NLP Practitioner Training first. Master Practitioner builds directly on practitioner-level knowledge, assuming you’ve already developed foundational NLP skills and understanding. Starting with Master Practitioner without the foundation would be confusing and unproductive.

Skilled Helper Practitioner Course (Advanced to Expert) requires completing The Skilled Helper Training Course first. The advanced course deepens and extends skills introduced in the foundation programme, so prior completion ensures you’re working at the appropriate level.

Beyond these specific progressions, course order is entirely flexible.

Courses that work well as foundations. Whilst not mandatory, some courses provide broader grounding that makes subsequent learning easier:

Diploma in Modern Applied Psychology (DiMAP) introduces integrated understanding across multiple psychological traditions. If you complete DiMAP early, other courses will feel more contextualised because you’ve established the conceptual framework. However, many learners complete DiMAP later—or never—without issue.

A Beginner’s Guide to NLP provides accessible entry into practical psychology. It’s designed as a first course for those new to applied psychology, but experienced learners often skip it entirely if they’re already familiar with psychological concepts.

Recommended but not required progressions. Some courses naturally complement each other:

Life Coaching progression: Life Coaching Certificate Course → Skilled Helper Training → Skilled Helper Practitioner. These build coaching competence sequentially, but you could study them in different order depending on your prior experience.

CBT progression: The CBT Toolkit → Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Practitioner Course. The Toolkit introduces principles; the Practitioner course develops application skills. Logical sequence, but not mandatory.

Mindfulness progression: Mindfulness for Mental Health → Mindfulness Practitioner Diploma. The former introduces concepts; the latter develops deeper practice and teaching capability.

Again, these progressions aren’t enforced—they’re simply coherent pathways if you’re developing skills systematically in one area.

When course order doesn’t matter at all. Many courses stand alone completely:

  • Personal growth Masterclasses (clarity, communication, confidence, etc.) can be taken in any order
  • Mental health and wellbeing courses address specific topics independently
  • School-specific courses within different schools have no cross-dependencies

You can study mindfulness, then NLP, then relationship skills, then CBT, then entrepreneurship—whatever sequence matches your evolving interests and needs.

How to think about course selection. Rather than asking “What should I do next in the correct order?” ask:

  • What do I need most right now?
  • What interests me currently?
  • What would serve my development best at this stage?

Your learning path should follow your genuine needs and curiosity, not some predetermined “correct” sequence. Psychological understanding develops holistically—insights from any area inform all others. There’s no single linear path to wisdom.

School bundles and sequencing. If you purchase a school bundle (5-12 courses within one school), you still choose the order you complete them. The bundle provides all content for that school, but you decide how to progress through it based on your interests and development.

The risk of rigid sequencing. Forcing yourself through “prerequisite” courses you’re not interested in—when they’re not actually mandatory—kills motivation. If you’re genuinely fascinated by hypnotherapy but feel you “should” complete foundational courses first, you’re more likely to lose enthusiasm and quit than if you’d started with what excited you.

Engagement and genuine interest sustain learning far better than dutiful adherence to some imagined correct sequence.

Practical guidance. Start with whatever addresses your most pressing need or strongest interest. After completing that, you’ll have clearer sense of what you need next—either deepening in that area or exploring something complementary. Let your learning path emerge organically from your developing understanding rather than trying to plan the entire journey upfront.

The only genuinely wrong approach is forcing yourself through courses you’re not ready for or interested in because you believe there’s a “proper” sequence you must follow.

Next step

Choose your first (or next) course based on current need or interest, not imagined prerequisites. Start learning immediately.
